Gatecrashing Christmas

We had a couple of hours spare before catching the ‘sleeping bus’ and Frank suggested we go to the New World Saigon Hotel for a drink. We caught a taxi there and imagine our delight when we see a big celebration with an amazing Christmas tree, a choir, free Christmas giveaways for the kids by Vietnamese Santa and champagne and nibbles for us. After enjoying our good fortune for some time, I asked one of the hostesses what the celebration was about. She said, ‘It is the start of Christmas, December first and we are raising money for children with cancer. Each star on the Christmas tree represents a child with cancer. Some of them will not live until Christmas. Tears started to fall down my cheeks as I thought about how lucky we are to be having this experience with our boys and them both being healthy. I asked how we could help. On each Christmas star there was a photo of a child, their age and what they would like for Christmas. They were simple wishes like a cuddly toy or a soft pillow. Rocco and Sam each picked a child and we took their star and put money in an envelope for them. It was a touching experience and a reminder of how lucky we are.
